The Dark Knight Rises Mobile Slot Review

The Caped Crusader’s saga made for a very popular set of movies a few years ago, the popularity that DC comics seemed eager to expand, even today. But with such a famed movie, it was only a matter of time before someone managed to get the rights to make a slot around it, and it was Microgaming that managed to scoop it up. With 5 reels and 243 ways to win, the Dark Knight Rises embraces the conflict between Bane and Batman, and invites you to pick a side in order to profit from the battle between them.

The choice in graphics is deliberately dark, featuring black and and light blue as key colours, while mixing gambling poker card icons with symbols from the characters that appear in the movies. It can feel off at times, but seeing clips from the movie again, and in case of five-of-a-kind wins, voicelines from Batman and Bane, always seemed to pick things up again. Of course, then the fight between the two breaks out, and you’re back to a bit of uncanny valley as their animations are obviously too stiff and rigid, ruining the experience.

Scatters use a rather peculiar image to sell themselves – the bomb that Bane planned to use to level the city. Scatters can reward free spins, one of four different ones, in fact, and on top of that, you also get a minor cash prize if you have two or more Scatters present on the reels at the same time, which works out as a small bonus just in case things don’t go that smoothly with the actual special feature.

On the other side, we have Wilds. They pay less than Scatters do, which isn’t that surprising, seeing as they are more common and can mesh with any other icon to complete a win, except for Scatters themselves. They use the movie logo to show them off, and if you get lucky, you can see Wild expanding to cover an entire reel to help out with a potential win.

How to Play The Dark Knight Rises

We liked the movie, and we do like this slot. But we can’t shake the feeling that if it weren’t for the tie-in with the movie, this Microgaming release would feel average. And it is average, which isn’t bad, but it isn’t great either. The paytable is about what you usually hope to see from a 243 ways to win game, and to their credit, the ability to choose which feature you like is quite welcome instead of having to unlock it or it being random.

So you can hope for a mixture of normal gameplay wins and bonuses to fill up your wallet. But The Dark Knight Rises seems to be moody at times, swinging from constant wins climbing higher and higher, and then a pitfall where you can’t score a single thing. Again, not bad by itself, but an acquired taste and a hope you’ll recognize it before you lose too much.

Jackpots & Progressives

This time around, the slot doesn’t have a progressive jackpot, which we find odd, especially as the previous title did show it off. Still, it works well with what it has, shifting the focus from one giant jackpot to a bunch of special features that can be equally rewarding.

If you spend any longer amount of time with this Microgaming release, you will find the bonuses to be the largest money makers, when you can get them to appear. This relates to the moodiness, perhaps, but we had streaks of free spins and times where none at all popped up.

Bonus Games & Sign-ups

There are four different Scatter activated bonuses you can work towards, and a few others that are randomly triggered. You can pick Bane’s side, which allows you to choose either Rolling Reels, which grants consecutive wins on a single free spin, with symbols that are blown off and replaced by others, or Super Stacked Wilds, which triples the amount of Wild symbols that can appear.

On Batman’s end, you can choose Extra Wild Blast, which allows you to replace Wilds with another regular symbol to act as a Wild instead for the duration of the bonus, or you can pick Heat Seeking Wilds, which will cause extra Wilds to appear at random on the reels.

We already mentioned Expanding Wilds above and, on top of that, if you have a non-winning table, it can occasionally shift around to create the best winning combination with what icons it has. This is the Symbol Scramble feature, and it is completely random.
