While his movie might not have seen a lot of love, Superman still remains a fan favourite for a great deal of people. He’s been somewhat overshadowed by Batman and his impressive line-up of Christopher Nolan movies, but nobody ever said Clark Kent gives up easy. It’s certainly proof enough, as beyond just getting his own movie, Superman won an even more important prize – his very own slot! Some might accuse us of being slightly biased because we review video slots, but don’t listen to those people. Because unlike the Man of Steel movie, which was somewhat bland and not received very well, the game is a lot better, and comes with the promise of not one, but four progressive jackpots, while offering you the comfort of playing it from your own home instead of having to share a cramped cinema seat to watch the movie.
Man of Steel offers gamblers a 5×3 playing field with 25 fixed paylines, and the number of paylines increases up to 50 during one of the special features. And speaking of features, there’s a lot of them here. Playtech didn’t let the fact they’re offering four progressive jackpots stop them from trying to make their title engaging. Superman and General Zod can appear anywhere on the playing field, and shuffle right or left, respectively. When they meet, their clash brings theoretically unlimited free spins, in which Zod and his warriors fight Superman, with the feature ending when Superman loses. If you find the Krypton bonus symbol on the fifth reel, you win 7 free spins with higher paying icons and 50 paylines, not to mention up to 10 sticky Wilds during said free spins. Finally, another bonus icon can land on the fifth reel, which unearths up to 7 extra Wilds on the reels.
How to Play Man of Steel
We’re not that impressed with the visuals, if we’re entirely honest. The symbols include characters from the movies and are entirely still. There’s no stylisation, nothing to really make them stand out. Even the other icons, such as Clark’s glasses, the bus and the mailbox all simply stand around and the only animation that plays is when Superman clashes with one of three villains, where a scene from the movie plays. As an upside, however, the icons during the Krypton free spins are entirely unique and don’t appear during the base game.
On the gameplay side of things, we’re pleased there are as many special features as there are. Considering Man of Steel has 4 progressive jackpots, it would have been easy to just make them the focus, and make players grind the game in hopes of winning. Instead, Playtech fills their title out with various special features, which break up the monotony a great deal. Keep in mind that this Playtech release is low volatility, which means a lot of wins that aren’t that particularly great. You can get some good scores from the title, but outside of the progressive jackpots, it’s going to be very rare.
Jackpots & Progressives
There are four progressive jackpots, the green mini, the blue minor, the yellow major and the red grand jackpot. At any point during the base game, a spin can trigger the progressive jackpot, which opens a honeycomb, which hides twenty blank spots. Each spot, when opened, has a different colour, and you need to collect a certain amount of each colour to win that progressive jackpot. The smallest jackpot requires the least amount of colours to collect, while the grand jackpot needs five symbols. The first one you complete is the progressive jackpot you take home, so pick carefully!
