We love a good slot theme. It helps set the stage for what awaits and lets your mind wander off and imagine all sorts of things. More often than not, it also ends up being mildly informative, if it’s based on historical events! But some games decide they don’t really need one. Playtech certainly seems they can get away with it here. Will they succeed?
Lucky U is a release whose theme is both generic and completely out of left field. It is played on a 5×3 board with 5 fixed paylines. To win, collect three or more identical symbols in adjacent positions, starting from the leftmost reel. All wins must follow one of the currently active paylines or a cash prize won’t be awarded to the player.
You’ll find only one special feature available in this slot. You need to collect a certain number of horseshoes to win 5 free spins. But all those horseshoes come with a cash prize and the total amount you win will be revealed when the bonus begins. This prize is then awarded again every time a silver star appears on the playing field.
How to play Lucky U
Personally, we don’t mind simplistic visuals that much. But as reviewers, it’s our job to rate every part of the game: graphics included. And while they aren’t bad, they’re not good either. The background image has… something going on. It looks interesting at first, but it won’t keep your attention for long. So it all comes down to the icons.
Symbol designs aren’t that much better, unfortunately. There are a few generic ones, like the five playing card royals: 10, J, Q, K and A. But then you have some really weird ones, like a pyramid with an eye in the middle and a buffalo with glowing eyes. Some of the icons are very clearly visually distinct, but that’s not enough to save the rest of the boring graphics.
The Playtech release has a medium variance and its sole special feature plays a big part in its gameplay. Lucky U demands that you score the special feature if you plan on winning anything substantial. Personally, we prefer having several bonuses for a bit of diversity. But that wouldn’t work, given how powerful this special feature is.

The slot doesn’t have a progressive jackpot. Instead, it has a fixed jackpot, a respectable 500x on each spin. The game has an RTP of 96.05%, which is just slightly above the current industry average.
