Though Norse religion has gone since been wiped out, its cultural impact has remained upon the Scandinavian countries, and from them, it spread further out. One of its many enigmas were the Valkyries – women clad in armour, descending from Valhalla to pick and uplift those worthy into the Odin’s halls, where these soldiers would train for Ragnarok. Despite their appearance, they are not human, though many old Norse sources do focus on their love affairs with human men. However, these glorious shieldmaidens had a darker side to them – their role was not simply to permit worthy warriors into Valhalla, but also to choose who will die in battle, using malicious magic to ensure their will is carried out. Somewhat ruins the mystical image.
So, we’re not surprised that Playtech chose to skirt around that uncomfortable topic to focus on the beautiful, powerful female soldiers employed by Odin instead. The game offers gamblers a 5×3 playing field with 25 fixed paylines. It has several special features that can benefit the player. During normal gameplay, a losing spin can activate Touch of the Valkyries, during which all warrior symbols, which include the helmet, the axe and the shield, are transformed into Wilds, securing a guaranteed winning combination. Collecting stacked Wild Valkyrie symbols on the first, fifth or both first and fifth reels will trigger March of the Valkyries, which will prompt the Valkyries to start marching to the opposite side of the reels, which freezes all warrior icons in place and make them pay double if they are frozen by both groups of Valkyries. Furthermore, once two groups of Valkyries meet in the middle, they also double any score they are a part of.
How to Play Call of the Valkyries
We have to give credit where it’s due for Playtech – this is one gorgeous title. The screen transition on one of the special features is amazing and the flying Valkyries during the March of the Valkyries feature is honestly gorgeous. The symbols and smooth animations are great, and the whole title is quite visually appealing, even on mobile devices, provided your phone is capable enough to handle things without much lagging. The icons themselves include playing card letters such as 10, J, Q, K and A, a shield, an axe and a helmet as warrior symbols, and then Wilds and Scatters on top of those.
On the gameplay side of things, Call of the Valkyries feels decent to play, relying on its special features to carry the experience forward. It doesn’t really try to break new ground, and we don’t fault it – after all, there’s a reason why we’ve comfortably settled into the current model. Thanks to medium volatility, you won’t be stuck without a feature appearance for too long, but at the same time, those bonuses are less powerful than they might have been in a high volatility title.
Jackpots & Progressives
There’s no progressive jackpot in Call of the Valkyries. All the big scores are hidden behind the special features – whether they be the marching Valkyries, or another bonus we have yet to mention! The biggest single win is 500 coins for a five-of-a-kind score, which is alright, but it pales in comparison to the largest win in the title, which sits at a whopping 1,000x the total wager! Certainly a jump from the usual fare.

This will lead the Valkyrie across the battlefield, where she must loot the fallen soldiers for their belongings, rewarding cash prizes. However, if she stumbles into a demon, she loses a life – and she only has two of them. If both lives are lost, the feature ends. If you reach Valhalla, each remaining life will reward a 2x multiplier to the total win.
