When a name as big as NetEnt is involved, you know the next title is going to be something exciting. This time around, the Swedish developers decided to go to their pagan roots and tap into the familiar Nordic mythology, making use of the powerful old Gods and their portrayal as stone constructs to give gamblers something cool to look at. In essence, Asgardian Stones borrows the gameplay from Gonzo’s Quest, but adds a much cooler mechanic to swapping out symbols – rather than just switching them around, the symbols explode, and new ones fall down. Asgardian Stones offers gamblers a 5×3 playing field with 20 paylines and a boatload of bonuses to work with. As we mentioned, symbols blow up when a winning combination occurs, and there is the presence of colossal symbols – giant 2×2 and 3×3 versions of the same icons that can literally crush the symbols beneath to make room for themselves and increase the multiplier for that turn alone when they do. Depending on how many parts of the mega symbol are visible – just the bottom, bottom and middle, or the whole thing is in view, you get between one, two, or three prizes from the wheel. This game looks fantastic visually. NetEnt is starting off 2018 strong when it comes to graphics, and they want everyone to see it. The screen change when the free spins occur is great, as is the effect of seeing the colossal icons outright crush the smaller ones beneath themselves. The moody music, the lightning and the animations, it all comes together in a beautiful sense of spectacle that will no doubt leave many phones crying trying to make it all work. As far as gameplay goes, this slot seems to be orientated towards a more low to medium variance audience. The features are certainly fun to see, and the symbols look great, but none of them really bring a really big score that you expect from a high volatility title. Instead, the brunt of the cash flow for us was with random five-of-a-kind wins or colossal symbols crashing down and increasing the multiplier.

Other than that, your chances are to get lucky with the free spins on the bonus wheel and carry off some huge score, but there is only so much that you can do with a 5×3 playing field. If it was larger, there would be more opportunity for the chain wins to become more of a factor, but as it is, it’s just a nice distraction.
