The Matrix Mobile Slot Review
It feels like it was just yesterday that the first Matrix movie came out and we were blown away by all the special effects and the cool story. A lot of scientists today say that it’s more than likely that we live in a simulation, but for a lot of people, the Matrix was the first time they ever came into contact with such an idea. We wish we could say that it held up today, but the first movie is a bit of a chore to watch today, since there’s a lot of focus on showing off all the cool special effects that were all the rage in 1999. Fortunately, we’re not here to review the movie – we’re more interested in the Playtech’s slot adaptation of the Matrix series. So lean back in your chair, and hope that our sentient AI overlords choose to grant us a bit of luck as we gamble our savings on the fate of humanity.
The Matrix offers gamblers a 5×4 playing field with 50 fixed paylines. It has several special features to offer players. Regular Wilds and free spins, but also Black Cat Wild that triggers the Déjà Vu Shuffle feature. During normal gameplay, Cat Wilds can fill the fifth reel, and will then replicate on the first reel, while all other symbols shuffle around to give you a chance at winning with a row of Wilds on either side. For free spins, landing Scatters on the first, third and fifth reel gives you an option between two special features. The first one involves Agent Smith, while the second one uses the Sentinels. Agent Smith rewards 8 free spins, in which he appears all over the reels in a much larger number than usual, increasing chances of massive wins. The Sentinel doesn’t have a limit of free spins. They swarm the reels, and lock in place after appearing on the reels. When the bomb icon lands, it removes all Sentinels on the reels before the next spin. The Sentinel free spins finish when six or more Sentinel icons are on the reels at the same time.
How to Play The Matrix
There’s quite a few visual details that really make this slot shine. Characters from the movie like Morpheus, Trinity and Agent Smith can all appear stacked on the reels, and when two or more stacked characters appear on the reels as part of a winning combination, you get a short clip from the movie of a rather badass moment they were a part of. The same thing happens when you first activate the free spins, and then you get a different clip depending on which special feature you choose. The backdrop also employs the moving green code that’s become synonymous with the movie, and you see some of those fake letters as symbols in the game. Our only nitpick is that the code in the backdrop doesn’t move until you press spin, which we feel is a huge missed opportunity.
On the gameplay side of things, The Matrix relies on its special features to carry the day. The Déjà Vu Shuffle feature that appears during normal gameplay is nice and all, but it simply doesn’t compare to the fun of the free spins, which alter the core gameplay loop just enough to really make them stand out. Keep in mind, even with the bonuses, it’s all luck at the end of the day – hence why we had an Agent Smith feature in which we got no Agent Smith symbols on the reels during one spin.
Jackpots & Progressives
There’s no progressive jackpot in this Playtech release, so all the thrilling scores come from the special features. Ironically, despite the red pill supposedly being the more risky option in the movie, the red option of unleashing additional Agent Smiths feels like the safer choice in the slot itself. You have a fixed amount of free spins, and greatly improved chances of scoring five-of-a-kind wins on the reels, compared to the blue Sentinels feature, which simply locks the Sentinels in place, and the amount of free spins you get could be really small, or a lot more than the guaranteed eight of the other pick.
