La Rouge Mobile Slot Review
From the first time you open up La Rouge, you can tell it feels just that little bit different than usual fare. A smooth, repeating musical tune, an old, 1930’s feel to the backdrop, and a small reel painted red, black and white that really create a striking look. It shows off that you can do a lot with a little, and this 5 reel, 20 payline release by Microgaming certainly drew us in on first glance. With a myriad of special features on offer, interesting visuals, and being the product of a relatively new developer, Old Skool Studios, it was more than enough for us to try it out as soon as possible.
A Sin City vibe comes off very clear with this slot. A similar colour palette is visible and you have a pretty dame, a gruff investigator and a city filled with glamour that hides the seedy underbelly within it. It reminisces rather well about the game itself, although we doubt that was the intention of either publisher or developer when they were creating La Rouge.
The aforementioned gentleman in a hat is the Scatter. The symbol itself offers some minor pays and can reward between 8 and 20 free spins depending on how many Scatters were present. The bonus can be retriggered, Wilds appear stacked while it is active and you also get a multiplier to increase all your wins while the extra turns are happening. The only downside to this special feature is the fact you can’t activate the other one while it is active.
The bonus icon activates a multi-stage bonus that can be equally amazing and disappointing. You roll up to the hottest club in town and ride the elevator, collecting prizes along the way. You can get one off win, an advance which makes you skip that level and all the wins you could have gotten on it, a win-all which gives you all the wins on that floor and a collect that ends the special feature and deposits everything you’ve won so far into your pocket.
How to Play La Rouge
Despite the bonuses being more than appealing, normal gameplay leaves a lot to be desired. The striking looks hardly translate into the rest of the slot, and it shows off that infamous current day Microgaming paytable. All three of a kind wins are lower than your current bet, and even four of a kind wins aren’t amazing. As such, La Rouge can be comfortably placed as a game in which your only satisfying wins will come from the special features you can activate.
You can wager between $0.20 up to $10 a spin, although we would recommend staying on the lower end of the prize tree. Due to the small paytable and a large amount of dead spins, we can’t recommend forking out a lot of cash on this particular release. We’d really recommend just playing something else entirely, but if you decide to give it a spin or two, don’t say we didn’t warn you.
Jackpots & Progressives
There’s no progressive jackpot to work towards, as Old Skool Studios clearly wanted the focus of their release to be on the special features. In general, both of them sound fantastic on paper, but feel just that little bit rigged against you. The elevator mini-game is essentially a click and collect, but it can go from a satisfying win to giving you an advance in one round and a collect in the next, which just makes you feel like you drew that bonus for nothing.
The free spins thankfully don’t feel the need to have such gotcha moments. But because of that, they are a lot rarer to see on the playing field. In about a hundred and fifty spins we’ve put into the slot, we’ve seen it three times, but unlike the bonus game, it felt worth it each time it came up.
