Ah, Halloween. If you’re a fan of candies, horror and holidays, there’s no better time of the year than it. The holiday itself is dedicated to remembering the dead, including saints, martyrs and all departed faithful. It’s believed a great deal of the traditions we know today as part of Halloween actually take root from ancient Celtic harvest rituals, most specifically Samhain, which has Gaelic origins. Of course, whether or not it’s just a Christianized pagan holiday or a separate Christian holiday unrelated to Samhain, there’s no denying that the meaning of it has been kind of lost in more modern times, as the holiday’s become a commercialized shadow of its former self. And since everyone else is already cashing in on it, NetEnt decided they might as well cut themselves a slice of the pie with Halloween Jack.
Halloween Jack is a horror-themed video slot with a 5×3 playing field and 20 fixed paylines which pays from the leftmost reel to the rightmost reel. Gamblers can collect three or more Box Scatters to win 10 free spins and collecting three more on top of that rewards 5 more free spins. During free spins, gamblers will collect lantern symbols on the fifth reel and unlock three different Wild features. Three lanterns activate the stacked Wild Hell Hound, six lanterns triggered the stacked Wild Jack-o’-lantern, and finally, nine collected lanterns grants players Death Reaper expanding Wild. On top of these three, regular Wilds can also appear on the playing field. When they do, a re-spin is awarded, while Wild moves one reel to the left. This continues until no more Wilds are visible on the playing field. All wins that include Wild in them offer a 3x multiplier. The Walking Wild feature is active both during normal gameplay and during free spins.
How to Play Halloween Jack
Sometimes we’re astounded what NetEnt manages to pull off with simple phones and tablets. True, they are more powerful now than they were a few years ago, but the awesome graphical fidelity is mouth-watering. The moving fog effect is great, as is the wind blowing the wines hanging off the reel. Bats occasionally fly past the playing field as well. Symbols include playing card icons such as 10, J, Q, K and A, in washed out colours and with hands grasping them firmly, as well as unique artwork such as a rusted horseshoe, a raven, a bat, a horse and a woman, all looking rather creepy and possessed. The user interface is the standard NetEnt one, which loads all of the important buttons off to the side to keep things clean and crisp otherwise.
We don’t think it’ll cause anyone a great big fright to say this title is focused on special features. It’s not all bad. For instance, the Walking Wild feature we mentioned before is available during normal gameplay as well, and thanks to a 3x multiplier, you can get some solid scores there, too. That said, it can’t really compare to the wins you can get during free spins, especially with the upgraded Wilds that they bring if you collect enough lanterns. In general, we quite like the gameplay of Halloween Jack. It gives you something to look forward to until you activate the free spins, the free spins themselves are clearly a plus, but it also gives you a sense of progression as you play the free spins, and collect lanterns to make the feature even more powerful.
