It’s not that often we find ourselves being honoured with a preview, but when it’s something like Fortunium, how can we say no? The slot was first showed off at the ICE 2018 event in London, where it was given all the fanfare you would expect from one of the biggest names in the industry. You know it’s bound to be something special if they brought out a steam-powered ice cream buggy as well as treats themed after the two protagonists of the game. From the moment we saw it, we knew the visuals were going to blow us away. We’re big fans of the steampunk genre here in the office, and the fact a big title is going to be carrying one of our favourite themes has easily earned the company points in our book. But what we were most curious about weren’t the visuals – it was how the developers planned to make the game work.
Fortunium offers gamblers a 5×5 playing field with 40 fixed paylines. Usually, that sort of reel setup never quite works well on mobile – so the solution Microgaming’s development team put forward was to flip things to portrait mode. As far as special features go, you will be able to find Mystery symbols, which can appear to show either a high, low or Wild icon. The developers also introduced a Win booster, which increases your bet slightly, but make sure that no lower paying symbols can appear from the mystery icons. Mystery symbols also make an appearance with Mystery Reels, which is part of the free spins bonus. Landing three, four or five Scatters at the same time rewards gamblers with 10 free spins as well as one, two or three Mystery Reels being active at once. This does open up the possibility of having three fully Wild reels present on the playing field, though the odds of that are as rare as you imagine they are!
How to Play Fortunium
We already mentioned that we love the steampunk genre, and this slot delivers on it just how we wanted. Plasma guns, air ships, treasure chests, as well as Maximillian and Victoria, who both expand and appear as super stacked symbols allowing you a good look at their outfits, which, at least in Victoria’s case, seems like a blend of more modern stuff and old-timey Victorian English design, while Maximillian is full-blown steampunk in his styling, with a fancy top hat, a mechanical bird, and a beard and moustache combo that will put any modern day peasant to shame. It has some annoyances, such as poker card symbols and the portrait design, while making it stand out compared to most other titles, does mean the best part of the backdrop isn’t visible.
On the gameplay side of things, we certainly have a medium volatility vibe coming off from it. The special features bring a lot to the table and you’re usually chasing after those Mystery chests and free spins rather than trying to get a big score during normal gameplay. It certainly seems like it’s doing its best to be fun and rewarding, though you can get stuck in a rut with plenty of dead spins and no bonuses to really get you out of it, though Wilds seem to be frequent enough to break up the monotony.
Jackpots & Progressives
There’s no progressive jackpot and while the values still haven’t been set properly, the mechanics make it clear exactly what venues Microgaming want you to use to win a big prize. One of those jackpots is getting lucky with Mystery Reels that are active with free spins. We’ve only been able to get the game to give us three Mystery Reels once, and it felt awesome, though we can only imagine how much better it would have gone if we had enabled the Win booster beforehand. Other than that, five-of-a-kind Wild wins pay really well, too.
Bonus Games & Sign-ups
We have to admit, while it plays very well, we hope Microgaming throws in another, minor bonus that triggers more often. The current special features are great, but the title just needs a little bit more to make it stand out and to fill in those dead spin sections the slot struggles with sometimes.
