As the seventh season of Game of Thrones glues viewers to their screens, the popularity of fantasy medieval stories makes this the perfect time for Betsoft to play their card. Fire & Steel is a clear homage to the TV show with its fair share of kings, queens, crowns and various other valuables that a true monarch must bear. But it seems the dragons were switched out in favour of laser beams that burst from the Swordsman and Shieldmaiden icons, filling the reels with Wilds, and when two beams meet one another, they even activate free spins. Pair this with a 5-reel slot that offers 20 paylines that pay both left to right and right to left and the ability to gamble for more cash, and you have a true recipe for success.
Visuals are top-notch, and there’s no denying it. Once again, the models that sit on the sides of the playing field are stiff and unmoving most of the time, unless they’re reacting to a win, which we feel is a step down from Gonzo’s Quest, which really popularised this system. Beyond that, everything else is truly amazing to see play out on phones and tablets, but it should come as no surprise some older models might struggle to pull off the laser beam effects.
One of the big draws of Fire & Steel is that the game very clearly isn’t afraid to make Wilds more common than usual. They won’t always be useful, but we have seen them appear often enough to wager they will certainly help out once or twice. The challenge is to make both the Shieldmaiden and Swordsman appear at once, and to make their laser beams cross with one another, which triggers 10 free spins with the area where the two beams crossed becomes a permanent Wild. And if that isn’t good enough, it can also be re-triggered if you manage to pull it off again. Understandably, this makes free spins a very rare thing in this slot.
How to Play Fire & Steel
We have to admit, this Betsoft release appeals to us a lot. Paylines that pay both ways, frequent Wilds and stunning visuals all come together to really make something special. However, it should be noted that the game can have spells of dead spins, despite all these things going in its favour. Usually, we found these to happen after sizeable wins, so you might be warranted to take a break and try your luck another time after pocketing a bit of cash.
You can play it for $0.40 per spin up to $100, which gives a lot of flexibility in who can enjoy this title. However, it should be noted that Fire & Steel has both high paying symbols, just as much as it has some disappointing ones. Despite the gems looking fantastic, it really is underwhelming that some three of a kind winning combinations can pay less than what you wagered. We’re not sure if the fact it pays both ways was worth that detail, but we won’t hold it against the slot too hard.

There’s no progressive jackpot, but between the fixed jackpot being half decent and the possibility for big wins during normal gameplay, that isn’t a big deal. Still, there is also no denying that the appeal of constantly appearing Wilds improves things dramatically. And while free spins are rare to appear, they are usually good scores. We had them appear four times, and only once did we see a disappointing win that didn’t break 50x our wager.
