In the depths of a thick jungle, somewhere far, far away, several powerful, strong creatures lurk within. Massive, exotic felines ready to rip you to shreds if you encroach on their territory. Certainly, it’s enough to give anyone pause. These aren’t your regular cuddly kittens that you can find back home. These are dangerous animals that our ancestors tried to flee from, and the need to survive against nature is what prompted us to rise higher and to fight back against nature. Still, despite their danger, we can’t help but find these animals fascinating. And Microgaming is well aware of this – hence why we have a title that’s all about big scary cats.
Exotic Cats offers gamblers a 5×3 playing field with 243 ways to win, forgoing regular paylines. Instead, all wins are paid out depending if you have three or more symbols adjacent to each other, going left to right. The special features here aren’t anything particularly new, but they manage to do their jobs well. The free spins are standard fare at this point. Collecting three, four or five Scatters will reward you ten free spins, and you have an ability to win five additional extra turns by collecting three or more Scatters while the feature is already active. The second, and more interesting feature, are the expanding Wilds. Each big cat has its own reel – lions own reel one, tigers own reel two, panthers own reel three, leopards own reel four and cougars own reel five. If the corresponding animal lands on its own reel, then that reel will transform into full-reel Wild, and it is possible to use this to secure full five reels worth of Wilds if you are lucky enough. You also have regular Wilds which can appear on the playing field, but they do not expand, unfortunately – though they are the single biggest win in the whole slot.
How to Play Exotic Cats
Exotic Cats doesn’t really do it for us. It has some impressive visuals, such as the animals coming out to swipe at the reels when the expanding Wilds feature is activated, but for the most part, it just feels static and lifeless. While this is an in-house Microgaming title, as far as we know, it feels like it’s taken a step back compared to companies that cooperate with Microgaming as a publisher, when it comes to visuals. The thick canopy of the jungle behind the reels does not move at all and all the symbols have very minor animations. As it stands right now, this title is just boring to look at visually, and there’s no getting around that. The novelty of the big cats coming out to swipe at the reels to turn them Wild only lasts for so long.
The gameplay, at least, handles things a bit better in our opinion. The expanding Wilds are quite frequent, which makes regular gameplay relatively interesting. A right combination can lead to some decent wins without ever bringing up the free spins, though you’d be hard pressed to get around them if you’re hoping for any solid scores. While we’ve done our best to test the title, we haven’t been entirely able to pin down its volatility. We found no information on it, and best we can tell, it’s a medium variance game. We do know the RTP, which sits at 96.33%.
Jackpots & Progressives
There are no progressive jackpots in Exotic Cats to the disappointment of quite a few people, we’re sure, as it brings us to our next point. Gameplay in slots is comprised of two things – the actual fun of playing a title and the payouts you can get from it. And while the gameplay can be relatively fun, the pays in Exotic Cats are atrocious. It’s usually standard fare for progressive jackpot titles to have relatively poor pays, but this time around, we don’t have a progressive jackpot to look forward to.
