We don’t usually preface our titles with warnings, but we are going to tell you right now that this review and our Berryburst Max one will be rather similar. As you know, we do our reviews piece by piece, making sure that you’re well informed about each aspect of the title before you decide to dive further into it and spend your money. Berryburst and Berryburst Max don’t simply share a similar name – they are part of the NetEnt’s latest Max series, in which they make two versions of the title. One sporting a more moderate RTP and volatility, while the other increases all pays, but in turn, lowers the RTP and hikes the volatility by a lot. Today, we’re going to take a look at Berryburst, the less glamorous twin that woos you with more frequent, but smaller wins.
The NetEnt’s title offers a 5×3 playing field, forgoing paylines in favour of cluster wins. A cluster is comprised of five or more symbols that have the same icon and are connected to each other either horizontally or vertically. The more symbols you group in a single cluster, the bigger the win is. There’s no free spins bonus – instead, Berryburst, as its name implies, is a Starburst clone – relying on great, but simple graphics, upbeat music, and a single, easy to activate feature to really drive it home. Here, that feature is Wild. Wilds can appear anywhere during normal gameplay – they automatically expand to cover the entire reel they landed on and reward a single re-spin afterwards. These expanded Wilds stay in place during the re-spin, and it is possible for another Wild to appear and expand from the first re-spin – which will reward another re-spin in which both expanded Wilds will remain in the same position.
How to Play Berryburst
While it’s rather thematically simple, there’s no denying the NetEnt’s game is stunning. The interesting effect on the sides of the screen looks quite cool, and the simple backdrop image darkens to the centre, making the reels more prominent. The reels themselves aren’t drawn at all – their shape is implied thanks to the position of the symbols themselves. As far as the icons themselves go, you can find strawberries, oranges, plums, kiwis, hearts, spades and diamonds, all idly floating on the reels with a very minor animation that gives it that all too familiar NetEnt polish that makes their titles stand out compared to the rest.
The gameplay of Berryburst suited us much better than Berryburst Max. While we can’t say we’ve had the luck of triggering an avalanche of features and wins like we had in Starburst, the time we spent playing both titles left us in favour of Berryburst more. It stuck to the formula better, and proved to be a more fitting recreation of Starburst from the same developers, something people have been asking for a while now. The more frequent features speak for themselves – regular Berryburst has an RTP of 96.56% against 96.23% from Berryburst Max. If you want a safer profit, you’ll go with this one.
Jackpots & Progressives
There’s no progressive jackpot in either Berryburst title. The regular Berryburst can’t really float as big of a number – its highest possible win after lining up all the re-spins perfectly is 1,868x the wager compared to the 6,000x in Berryburst Max. However, thanks to more frequent wins and a higher RTP, we do believe that Berryburst will win out for players who want a more secure win.
