Following the theme of mythology, this time, we travel further east, to the lands of the orient. Much like the Greeks laid the foundation for the Roman faiths, China did much the same for its neighbours, partially with intent, and partially because they were a massive, unified empire surrounded by smaller countries that looked up to it. So it’s no surprise that you find some similarities between them, even if they aren’t an exact replica. Not to mention eventual rivalry between countries caused certain divisions to form. Ancient Gods, an RTG release, tackles the Chinese side of mythology, following the various ancient guardians, immortal beasts that serve to protect heaven and the universe.
The title offers gamblers a 5×3 playing field with 25 flexible paylines. This means gamblers can turn different paylines on or off, lowering their total wager, and, in turn, lowering their chances to win further. A useful tool for budget gamblers, but not so much for anyone else. The title has two special features, the first of which being Wild. When either Wild or Scatter appear, they have a chance of creating two more Wilds, which occupy two other positions on the reel. The second bonus is the free spins feature, activated by collecting three or more Scatters. They can reward 6, 8 or 10 free spins depending on how many Scatters activates the bonus. Furthermore, if the feature was activated by four Scatters, all wins are doubled, while five Scatters will give a 3x multiplier to all payous. Any retrigger will simply add more free spins to the existing batch. As a cherry on top of the delicious pie, the first feature is no longer a chance, but guaranteed, meaning any Scatters or Wilds that land will expand to cover the reel fully in Wilds.
How to Play Ancient Gods
RTG was never a graphics powerhouse. They improved in the last year or two, but they’re far on par with some larger names in the business still. This title maintains the status quo in that regard. The backdrop is static yet gorgeous. The symbols have some minor animations that draw your attention, but nothing that’ll really impress you. Even the icons themselves, apart from the pantheon of guardians, are little more than coins of various colours and designs. Not ugly, but only a step forward from playing card symbols and numbers. It won’t win any awards, but it won’t lose points here, either.
On the gameplay side of things, Ancient Gods is very easy to get a handle on. Like most titles, the crux of it lies in scoring many special features without losing too much cash. The title boasts a medium volatility with an RTP of 96%, slightly above average for video slots, though, again, nothing spectacular one way or the other. Both expanding Wilds and free spins are also nothing new, but the title handles them well. They remain frequent enough that the player won’t be bored or lose all his cash waiting endlessly for their arrival.
Jackpots & Progressives
There are no progressive jackpots awaiting you in Ancient Gods. After playing around with it and looking at the paytable, the biggest possible win we could come up with is 7,500x the wager under some really specific circumstances, but there’s no denying that it’s a legendary jackpot if you manage to hit it. RTG give themselves some wiggle room and put the actual cap at 50,000x per payline, but we doubt anyone will be reaching that anytime soon.
