We usually associate the word empire with the great European powers. When it comes to empire, nobody beats the British, but the Dutch, Spanish, French and Portugese all had massive colonial empires that reigned over a great portion of the world. All of these powers would eventually reach and carve up the Americas to their liking, but before they came about, the continent had its empires. One of them was the mighty Aztec empire, which reigned across modern-day Mexico for two hundred years, before the aforementioned European empires came knocking on their doorstep. What was left behind was a rich culture, with forgotten knowledge and a language that today intrigues a great deal of people.
Microgaming is well aware of this. It’s why their latest title Amazing Aztecs focuses on this forgotten empire. The game offers gamblers a 5×3 playing field with 243 ways to win. The title is rather unique in that it doesn’t offer you any Wilds or Scatter. There’s no free spins feature, no randomly appearing Wilds, nothing of the sort. A sole bonus you can unlock in this Microgaming release is the Giant Re-Spin, which can occur at any time. After every winning combination, the icon on the third reel has a chance to be highlighted, as well as the other two symbols. If the highlighted icon is part of the win, it activates the feature, which can cause a 2×2, 3×3 or 4×4 version of that highlighted icon to appear on the reels, to potentially enhance your winning combination. Naturally, if your win is larger and covers multiple paylines, you also have a better of chance of activating the feature and if it covers all three rows on the third reel, it’s a guaranteed feature hit.
How to Play Amazing Aztecs
It’s not the most amazing game visually. The theme is decently done – the flute and drums music does a great amount to enhance the feeling of the title and really makes you feel like some jungle wandering badass ready to take on whatever’s coming. The symbols look cool and are all entirely unique, representing pendants and jewellery worn by the Aztecs, coming in various shapes, colours and sizes. The higher paying icons, meanwhile, are of the four characters – the shaman, the hunter, the princess and the chief. The lack of quality animations, however, was a major problem in our eyes and something that Microgaming really should have implemented.
On the gameplay side of things, the slot is hit and miss. This is always the case with just one special feature – you are entirely dependent on how well you do with it. The feature is designed to appear frequently, but the provided wins are rarely satisfying. It has a chance of creating big blocks after every winning combination, if the right symbol is highlighted, and even if the feature is hit, there’s no guarantee it’ll land in the right place to reward the win. Normal gameplay is essentially just pressing spin, as there are no Wilds or other features to spice things up.
Jackpots & Progressives
There’s no progressive jackpot in Amazing Aztecs. In fact, it’s fair to say that the big jackpots are all hidden beneath the feature. We can’t say that we’re particularly thrilled with the Microgaming’s offering, but when it works, it can really bring some juicy wins that are more than worth your time. For a medium volatility title, however, there are not a lot of times you can get to see that shine. More often than not, you’ll simply be fighting to maintain the budget you already have, which just makes that final jackpot hit when it arrives all the better provided, however, it does arrive.
